1 Peter at a Glance

1. The setting


Author	The apostle Peter (1:1), written through Silvanus (Silas) as amanuensis (5:12). Universally received in the early church; Petrine authorship is the standard evangelical position.
Written to	The “elect exiles of the Dispersion” in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia (1:1), largely Gentile believers across northern Asia Minor.
From	“Babylon” (5:13), almost certainly a symbolic name for Rome, ~AD 62-64, before the Neronian persecution reached its peak.
Occasion	Believers facing social hostility, slander, and trial “for the name.” Peter steadies their hope, calls them to holy living, and teaches them to suffer well after Christ’s pattern.
Key metaphor	Exiles and sojourners (1:1, 17; 2:11): citizens of heaven living as a colony of grace in a watching world.
Mood	Tender and urgent, doxological and pastoral, written by a shepherd who knows suffering and failure firsthand.

3. One sentence summary

The letter in a breath

Because God has given us a living hope in the risen Christ and made us His chosen, holy priesthood, we live as faithful sojourners, holy in conduct, submissive in our stations, joyful in suffering, humble in the fellowship, and watchful to the end.

4. The threads running through all five chapters

Identity before conduct: who we are (elect exiles, born again, a royal priesthood) grounds what we do.
Hope secured by the resurrection: an imperishable inheritance kept in heaven, living and active now (1:3-5).
Holiness as God’s people: “be holy, for I am holy” (1:15-16), lived out in the world.
Sojourners and exiles: at home in heaven, resident but not at home on earth (1:1, 17; 2:11).
Suffering after Christ: unjust suffering borne patiently after the Shepherd’s pattern, with a blessing mindset (2:18-25; 3:13-22; 4:12-19).
Submission in God’s order: to authority, masters, within marriage, and within the flock (2:13-3:7; 5:5).
Grace, humility, watchfulness: the posture of the priesthood to the end (5:5-11).
